The Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia is local affiliate of the Autism Society of America, which has over 100 chapters across the United States. We are a locally funded organization that celebrates over 30 years of dedication towards improving the lives of all affected by autism in the Tidewater Virginia Region.
Established as a volunteer organization, Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia has relied solely on people with autism, families and professionals who volunteer thousands of hours to help us achieve our mission of serving those affected by autism. In 2007, we hired our first part-time, staff member, Ms. Angel Barnhill. She serves as our Resource Director.
Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia serves the Tidewater community and beyond, to include the Peninsula, by promoting autism awareness and providing autism-related education, resources, and services.
An organization that offers the most effective services to improve the quality of life for all individuals affected by Autism, by promoting awareness, offering education and training, and providing activities through a network of dedicated staff, volunteers, and professionals.
Online Meet-up Group
In 2007 we developed an online Meetup group for updates on meetings, events, and to network with other families and professionals navigating the world of autism. To register visit http://meetup.com/tidewater-autism.
Community Awareness Projects
April has been designated “National Autism Awareness Month”. In an effort to promote autism awareness within the Tidewater Community, we promote awareness through presentations provided throughout the year to area civic groups, organizations, agencies, and schools (GFF School Wareness Project). We also encourage our community to participate and create awareness events and fundraisers throughout the year to include our Autism Awareness 5k/1 Mile Walk, Benefit Concerts, School Awareness Events, etc.
In addition to our Resource Center/Office located in Tidewater Virginia, we now (As of October 1, 2013) have a Peninsula Autism Society Group. This group has Information and Referral Resources, Monthly Meetings, a Resource Directory and a Lending Library which is accessible to the Peninsula community.
