The Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia is local affiliate of the Autism Society of America, which has over 100 chapters
across the United States.We are a locally funded organization that celebrates over 30 years of dedication towards
improving the lives of all affected by autism in the Tidewater Virginia Region.
Established as a volunteer organization, Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia has relied solely on people with autism,
families and professionals who volunteer thousands of hours to help us achieve our mission of serving those
affected by autism. In 2007, we hired our first part-time, staff member, Ms. Angel Barnhill. She serves as our
Resource Director.

Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia serves the Tidewater community and beyond, to include the Peninsula, by promoting autism awareness and providing
autism-related education, resources, and services.


An organization that offers the most effective services to improve the quality of life for all individuals affected by
Autism, by promoting awareness, offering education and training, and providing activities through a network of
dedicated staff, volunteers, and professionals.

Resource Center
The Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia was awarded a grant from Beach Fund#2, Discretionary and the Fain Family
Fund of the Virginia Beach Foundation for a Resource Center.The Resource Center opened September 2008. The
center serves those in the community who are affected by autism. The resources available include an expanded
lending library, two computer stations with internet access, color printer, and specialized software to make and take
materials to support loved ones living with ASD within the community. Also included in the new Resource Center is
a flat screen television to host  “Family to Family” video workshops.The Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia’s
Resource Center is a place where all those affected by autism can learn and grow in a supportive Environment.

Spectrum disorder:

Peninsula Group

In addition to our Resource Center/Office located in Tidewater Virginia, we now (As of October 1, 2013) have a Peninsula Autism Society Group.  
This group has Information and Referral Resources, Monthly Meetings, a Resource Directory and a Lending Library which is 
accessible to the Peninsula community.

Project ACT Workshops
In October 2007 TASA initiated Project ACT (Autism Community Training) in an effort to provide educators,
administrators and child care professionals, as well as parents and others, training,in accordance with international
best practices. Our goal is to enable parents, professionals and para-professionals to support children and adults with
Autism Spectrum Disorder to live productive, satisfying lives within their families and communities. Former Project
ACT speakers have included Patrick McGreevy, Ph.D, BCBA, Tamara S. Kasper, MS/CCC-SLP, BCBA, Rick
Kubina, Ph.D, BCBA, and Mark Sundberg, Ph.D, BCBA.

Newsletter/Online Meet-up Group
Our newsletter, Altruism is distributed to over 700 plus parents, educators, and medical professionals
throughout the surrounding Tidewater area and beyond free of charge. Subscribers are kept up to date with the latest in
national and local bio-medical, advocacy news, events, and activities. In 2007 we developed an online meet up
group for updates on meetings, events, and to network with other families and professionals navigating the world

Community Awareness Projects

April has been designated "National Autism Awareness Month". In an effort to promote autism awareness within
the Tidewater Community, we promote awareness through presentations provided throughout the year to area civic
groups, organizations, agencies, and schools (GFF School Wareness Project). We also encourage our community to
participate and create awareness events and fundraisers throughout the year to include our Autism Awareness 5k/
1 Mile Walk, Benefit Concerts, School Awareness Events, etc.
